but meanwhile in China ....

Many people today in Rome will mark the 'birthday' of the city which goes back to 21st April 753B.C. Over the centuries, the city has seen many changes and has an incredible history that would take a lifetime to narrate. However, while Romulus and Remus argued over the exact point to start their new settlement, life continued in other parts of the world.

The Vannic Kingdom in what is now part of modern day Armenia had its origins in the Shulaveri-Shomu culture dating back to 6500B.C. The Greeks had started creating colonies in Asia Minor to guarantee food supplies for their people. The Etruscans were going strong in Italy. Meanwhile, in China, the incredible Chou (also known as Zhou) dynasty had been going strong since 1027B.C.

The history of the Chou dynasty sees two parts. The first part from 1027-771B.C. is referred to as the Western or Royal Chou period. Hao, the capital of the dynasty, was overrun in 771B.C. by northern invaders and, from the following year, a new capital was established in Loyang. That started the Dong or Eastern Chou period that lasted until 221B.C.

This period gave us a famous name: Confucius. Still today, many people study the philosophies of the great master and quote one of his renowned quotes, many of which are still applicable to modern life.

There were numerous developments during the lifetime of the dynasty including the introduction of iron armour and chariots for use in warfare, and the introduction of coinage, multiplication tables and..chopsticks!!!
